There were many who were quick on their feet and booked a trip south with the hope of finding deep snow. From SGN, Ivar Løvik, Asbjørn Eggebø Næss, Marit Rolvsjord and Nikolai Nygaard have all made the trip with wide skis in their luggage. We had a quick chat with the gang about the experiences and conditions in Austria over the past week.

Ivar was first out and traveled down already before the New Year. Where have you been and what kind of terrain have you driven?
"We started our stay in Zauchensee. It is about an hour's drive south-east of Salzburg. Much of the terrain there lies below the forest line where there is soft and nice forest driving. It snowed mostly steadily after we got there. After five days there, we traveled to Zillertal where we met Asbjørn. The Zillertal is a beautiful valley located just east of Innsbruck. Truly a skier's dream. Here you will find almost all ski terrain - big mountains and great forest skiing."
Asbjørn has been a big fan of Zillertal his whole career and has this to say about the place:
"In the Zillertal, it always snows if the wind comes from the north. Although there are other places in the Alps that may have received more snow during this period, Zillertal was probably a good place to be in terms of the terrain here. The avalanche danger has also been high and has been at 3 and 4 throughout the period. That's why we've been in the forest 99% of the time."
Have the conditions been as wild as they appear on social media, Asbjørn?
“It probably has. I feel that it has been several years since I have driven so many altitude meters with good snow. Powder for the purse every day!”

Nikolai Nygaard has settled in Innsbruck this winter and is so far more than happy with it:
“It has been the deepest week of my life so far. Absolutely ridiculous conditions. With Innsbruck as a starting point, I am close to both the Zillertal and the Arlberg, and you have an incredible number of ski centers to choose from."
Marit Rolvsjord has also been in the area. If you were to share some tips with those traveling south now, what would you say?
"Bring extra glasses in your bag! Every day is a double-goggle day. If they fill up with snow or start to fog, the day can be ruined when it snows as much as it has here."
When it comes to choosing skis, there is little doubt that wide skis are suitable for conditions like this. Solid middle width is probably the most important thing, so you can let the skiing choose a little which skis you go for.
urRakkar is the ski for you who like to play downhill and want a ski with good pop and response in loose snow and off cushions and cliffs.
The Togga is a fast ski that quickly gets level and is incredibly easy to drive in snow like this. With full rocker, it is incredibly manoeuvrable and will give you a raw powder experience.

Nikolai about urRakkar
Incredibly playful powder tool for those who like the driving I like! The best powder jib ski I've tried! PS - choose long length if you are as tall as me.
Watch out for Togga
Absolutely raw skis for conditions like this. It spears through the snow and gives incredibly good speed and flow. The best tool for my use - done with that case!
